Rock Legend Bo Diddley Dies
He truly was one of the founding fathers of Rock’n’Roll. Another one of the great ones has left us. Ellas Otha Bates McDaniel has passed away at his home in Archer, Florida of heart failure. He was 79. We loved him as Bo Diddley.
From Buddy Holly to the Rolling Stones, from Smokey & the Miracles, The Animals and The Who, to George Thorogood and Bruce Springsteen, everybody loved & practiced the “Bo Diddley Beat”.
Bo actually started out playing classical violin at the age of 5…by about the age of 10 after hearing the blues & the rhythm & blues of John Lee Hooker, he was compelled to switch to guitar…even if it meant building his own. He would, of course, not only master his trademark square guitar, but he’d also invent new ways to play it, and pioneer new sounds that could come from it. He’d electrify it, reverb it, make it sometimes somehow pound like a drum, the beat, the beat, the beat!
One of the first to be inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, he had been given a lifetime achievement Grammy, & he had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame He was always appreciative of all his honors, but as he said many times, those honors didn’t put any money in his checkbook. He said it more than once when I interviewed him a few years ago at Sirius…and that was 50 years after his first release. It’s true too that Bo didn’t really have a lot of hits with his own records, but just like it’s true that you can’t judge a book by looking at the cover, you can’t judge a man’s importance by looking at the charts. Since he was paid a flat fee originally, he didn’t receive royalties when others would do his songs…or copy his beat…and he wasn’t shy about speaking up about it.
Bo Diddley had a spirit and a fire…and he was fightin’ right to the end. Last year he had the stroke, then the heart attack, but he was still planning to come back. Well Bo, now your pain is gone, but your music will live on! You don’t need to come back, ‘cause to us you will have never left…and you never will. And as far as the money goes, ya, you deserved. To us your music was priceless, and you sir are rich beyond words with the love we have and will always have for you! And we hope you can feel that today!

New York's WCBS FM 101.1 is BACK, and Pat is ON THE AIR!

At 1:01PM on Thursday, July 12th, New York's legendary WCBS FM returned to the air after a two year absence (when the 101.1 frequency was known as "Jack" FM). Within 24 hours of the debut of CBS-FM, playing The Greatest Hits of The 60's, 70's and 80's, Pat was hired, and was on the air that next day! This marks a return to the station for Pat, where he was an air personality before the format change.
You can hear Pat every Sunday from 10AM to 3PM, and during the week hosting special "CBS FM Hall of Fame" features.

I was glad to hear you on various channels on Sirius Radio. I remember listening to your show on WPLJ in the 70’s. You introduced me to so many artists that I still listen to to this day. It’s a pleasure to hear a DJ have some fun and sound relaxed on Sirius.

Hi Pat, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your shows on Sirius. Your knowledge of the blues and classic rock combined with your talent for developing cohesive sets distinguish you as a true professional. At 47, I’ve listened to a lot of music and yet your shows have kept the music fresh and interesting by pulling out less played vintage songs and highlighting the artist’s contributions and evolution of the style of music. It’s obvious you put a lot of thought and effort into your shows, thanks, keep up the good work. Your shows alone make the subscription worthwhile.

I listen to you on both the 60’s and Blues Channels. Your work is appreciated because you tell interesting stories without being too “long-winded”. Best wishes from San Diego.

Pat – I grew in North Jersey listening to you. About two years ago my girlfriend bought me Sirius radio and I fell in love with it. When I first realized you were on it, I was blown away. I always loved listening to you on regular radio, but you never really had the opportunity to dive into the music that you play now, which never helped me realize how great of a musical icon you really are. Switching between my favorite stations (The Vault, Vinyl, and The Blues stations), I quickly realized that you are on all of them. Being able to listen to you speak, play, and interview all of the musicians I quickly became a huge supporter. Now I check all the stations for you to see what music I can learn about, and I will continue to listen to all of your broadcasts.

Pat...First of all, you are ABSOLUTELY the best DJ on Sirius…or anywhere for that matter. Your history alone is incredible but the sound of your voice and your stories, I KNOW I’m listening to a Rock’n’Roll FREAK!!! I Love it!!! THANKS SO MUCH MAN!!!

Subscribed to Sirius not long ago and was pleasantly surprised to hear the familiar voice of Pat St.John. Awhile back when FM radio was good I recall many occasions listening to your shows-always great music. So Pat after many years (more than I care to count) it is a pleasure to hear you on the air and playing some awesome music. Thank you. Peace,
PD

Catch
up with the development of the new full-length documentary currently
under production called Johnnie Be Good about
Rock N' Roll hall of famer Johnnie Johnson.
The
"father of Rock N' Roll" was the man who first hired
unknown singer/guitarist Chuck Berry. Sitting
behind his keyboard, it was Johnnie who came up with the melodies
to go with Chuck's poetry to create "Rock and Roll Music",
"Sweet Little Sixteen", "Roll Over Beethoven"
and just about all the rest of those tunes that shaped and influenced
every Rock N' Roll artist who followed.
The
film is being produced by St. Louis television personality and
film maker Art Holliday, and features Keith
Richards, Bonnie Raitt, Bo Diddley, Bob Weir, and Taylor Hackford (director of "Hail! Hail! Rock N' Roll"
(a must-see movie as well), and many more who praise their idol
Johnnie Johnson.
Johnnie
Be Good will most likely be completed in late 2007
or early 2008. View the project and its progress by clicking

Pat's latest article from international magazine The Audiophile Voice reviews Tom Dowd's new DVD: "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music"
It's worth reading, as it's about one of the
greatest contributers to music the world has
ever known.
